Step 1: Define the Primary Function

The starting point for any special purpose container specification is a precise definition of what the unit must do. Vague requirements produce containers that don’t perform as expected. The primary function determines the structural configuration, internal fit-out, certification requirements and environmental specifications.

Step 2: Establish the Certification Requirements

  • Humidity range — critical for electronics, pharmaceuticals and precision instruments
  • Corrosion exposure — C3 inland, C4 coastal, C5-M offshore marine
  • Wind and snow loads — for permanent or semi-permanent installations
  • Seismic requirements — for installations in earthquake-prone regions

Step 4: Specify the Structural Configuration

Standard ISO container structures are designed for corner-loaded stacking and intermodal transport. Special purpose containers often require structural modifications that must be engineered and certified:

  • Additional lifting points — for non-corner lift configurations or offshore crane operations
  • Structural openings — for doors, windows, cable entries and ventilation penetrations
  • Floor reinforcement — for heavy equipment loads or forklift access
  • Blast resistance — for process plant or military installations within blast zones

Any structural modification invalidates the original ISO certification. All modified containers must be recertified by a competent authority before use.
